Catching Up: Last Shabbat

Once again my list of blogging topics is too long. So here are some photos and brief comments I may someday expand.

Last weekend I visited old friends. First the people who hosted me in their house for three weeks in 1967 while I tried to help with the farmwork. Last week they had other visitors also, including a daughter and several grandchildren. It was Friday night, the beginning of Shabbat. We had a nice dinner.

If I had time, I’d write something about the significance of ceremony in Israel even for nonreligious Jews, even without the traditional Sabbath candles. About what people mean when they talk about Israel as a Jewish State, which Israelis interpret in many different ways. About which aspects of Jewish religion/culture/identity/ethnicity require a state, and which might not. I’ll have to get to this another time.
