During my previous Israel/Palestine visit I ran into a group of teenagers from Dimona’s Black Hebrew community exploring the Negev. I took a lot of photos. Last Wednesday I took the bus to Dimona from Beer Sheva and walked out toward the city’s eastern edge, where the small community makes its primary home.
The group calls itself the African Hebrew Israelites of Jerusalem, the Hebrew Israelites for short, though most people refer to them as Black Hebrews. This is not the same group as the much more numerous Ethiopian Jews, and it’s not the group Israelis refer to as “Blacks,” a term often used for Jews from North Africa and the Middle East. Israelis I’ve spoken to tend to use the derogatory term “Cushi” for the Black Hebrews as well as for blacks more generally, partly (some say) to distinguish them from lighter skinned dark Jews.
There’s plenty online about the Hebrew Israelites’ migration from Chicago and Detroit in the 1970s and their effort to remain in Israel legally once their identification as Jewish was questioned. Those teenagers I photographed two years ago were speaking both Hebrew and US English slang, and the group’s communal living, religious beliefs, and cultural practices still reflect its origins in the US black Christian world as modified by their belief that they are the true descendants of ancient Hebrews. I hear they have great summer music festivals with an African-Caribbean beat.
The community’s Dimona village has more than a thousand people living in small row houses surrounded by restful gardens. There are several small gathering places, bulletin boards, a grocery store and restaurant.
The generation born in Israel, many now in their 20s, have children of their own. A lot of them.
Community members live in religiously observant polygamous households in accordance with precepts announced by community leaders, influenced heavily by the leader who brought them to Israel. The middle generation is now reaching army and college age, and members become teachers and work in other capacities outside the community, though there still seems to be relatively little awareness of much of what happens in Israel. Some members have left, apparently without problems, and smaller communities have formed in Mitzpe Ramon, Arad, and maybe another couple of places.
Most of the posters on bulletin boards were in English, sometimes with Hebrew words written in English letters.
About half the teachers in the community’s school across the street come from within the community. The school is a regular public school, with management from outside.
Across the street on the other side of the neighborhood is a large Dimona high school whose students often walk through the village and sometimes stop to buy snacks, though the lack of junk food keeps the numbers down. Indeed, diet and health more generally are central to the community’s religious beliefs, making use of the jacuzzi and exercise room more than simply health-related.
I had expected some separation between the community and the rest of Dimona, but there is no physical barrier, making it more like a neighborhood than a separate village. It’s just across the street from non-community houses and institutions. Outsiders frequently come through, and are met politely. Tours are available, though I hadn’t called in advance so wasn’t able to arrange it.
I do wonder how long the community can maintain its separate existence without physical separation, though for now most people seem, on the surface at least, to be content. I wasn’t there long enough, or more accurately didn’t make enough effort, to dig too far beneath the surface.
I had arranged to meet two friends at the community’s small restaurant, where we had a lunch of scrambled tofu, home fries, a vegan meat substitute, biscuits, and a couple of other things familiar to American-style vegan diets. No coffee — indeed, nothing to drink except the water we had with us. The group doesn’t believe in mixing liquids with food, a practice I encountered a couple of decades ago during my own health explorations but never before saw connected to religious beliefs. The food was really good.
I never did find out what happens in the House of Love.

I know it was intended former absorption center for Russian Immigrants, but when was it given over by the government to the AHIC? Great webpage by the way. The pictures make me miss the place. So far, these so-called “Israelites” are ok and peaceful, as long as their numbers are down Israel doesn’t have much to fear from them. Their food is ok, but they believe in some weird stuff (essentially they say they are the only “real Hebrews” and all the other Jews in Israel are false). Yet they make a pragmatic compromise and tone that aspect of their ideology down so that the Israeli government lets them stay there. There have been reports by defectors from the group of bizarre cult-like practices and mind control and stuff. My advice to any people considering joining them is think again.
Hello all I am not a member of the African Hebrew Israelite, but both of my parents are, they converted while I was away in college, and they unceremoniously had both my siblings a younger sister and younger brother join the organization.
Background-my mother has always been a stong forward thinking woman who is assertive and a natural leader, my father not so much so he is reserved and has yet to meet a solid goal of leadership that he has set fro himself in his life. against this backdrop in this organization they encourage that the man Or the “prince” to head the household and the woman and the children are subservient. My father who had never been a strong person or outspoken decides that he will not longer speak to the kids that all issues will go to my mother, she will take them to him he will make a decision and then bring the decision back to us. Needless to say that this created an untenable situation. This change was just the beginning….
This organization looks peaceful, but you need to look deep beneath the surface to understand what is really going on wtih them
-since my parents have joined this organization they have lost the home i grew up in, now live in one of the organization’s house’s, most if not all the people they now socialize with are part of the organiztion, this goup strongly discourages members from socializing with anyone outside the group especially family members. the are constantly asking for money and pressure members to pay “dues” whether they can afford to or not, they encourage polygamy and often work to circumvent US law by having men have one wife in the US and one or more wives outside of the us mainly in Dimona, Israel.
My father has systematically attempted to degrade myself and my siblings, per this organization anything not associated with them is not building the kingdom of heaven and thus bad. I had the fortunate blessing to be admitted to medical school and my father a “prince” in the African Hebrew Israelites informed me that it had no value because i was not in the kingdom.
He would keep my siblings out late on school nights and not care if they were too sleey to go to school saying that their high school education was “the white man’s education”
My father now while still married to my mother is now dating another woman in the African Hebrew Israelite organization, they practice polygamy, encourage women to have children but often use the teenagers as work horses to the adults to raise the kids, clean homes, work in the restaurants for so called “stipends” that are beneath minimum wage, they do not ensure that people have insurance instead encouraging many to apply for public support instead of their organization as a nonprofit providing health insurance.
I strongly recommend that anyone who is thinking about being part of their organization to very seriously reconsider, they present themselves very cleverly in a superficial manner as a back to or black roots organization, but they act like a cult in the manner that they try to coerce members to cut ties to their families and to only associate with them.
This organization has effectively prayed on my father’s vulnerability of needing someone to tell him he is a great leader, without pushing him to prove to that he actually can lead.
I want to warn anyone that is thinking of joining or has a family member that wants to join, or is getting involved to intervene and not allow them to go down the rabbit hole

Are you not realizing that scripture says these things? They are just attempting to adhere to what they believe The Living God wants them to do.
Scriptures say you have to accept the Messiah to gain salvation. If you haven’t accepted the Messiah, to them you are not in The Kingdom. If you have accepted Jesus as your savior, you are STILL not in The Kingdom, because they believe Yahshua is the Messiah. And even tho YOU may think it is the same thing, THEY do not think it is the same thing.
Scriptures strongly suggest that you fellowship with like-minded people. So they surround themselves with people who believe like them.
Scriptures say that the Messiah said that some of us will have to separate from our families and leave them behind to follow Him. It is to be considered a small price to pay to someone that essentially was offered up because of our sins.
I am sure they are in constant prayer that their loved ones will also one day accept these beliefs.
As for them asking for money, two things: 1) black Christian churches are ALWAYS asking for money. 2) how do people expect these things to run without the finances of others? This is why my mother’s church is defunct now; people saying “I’m not giving them any money because the pastor drives a cadillac.” the pastor has his OWN business! BUT the a/c is out and the roof needs to be redone — they DID NEED MONEY for that! He can’t pay it alone and you’re in there ALL WEEK anyway so why not give something to the cause?
When it comes to polygamy, you may not believe me but STUDY FOR YOURSELF. Scriptures NEVER say anything is wrong with a man having more than one wife. It is why the forefathers often had more than one wife. Moses had more than one wife; Abraham, Isaac and Jacob had more than one wife. Just because our society looks down on such things does not mean it’s against The Living God.
So long as they aren’t planning some sort of uprising (since they are trying their best to be scriptural I would be one to believe they are NOT), and so long as they aren’t planning a mass suicide (once again, something that is NOT scriptural) I don’t think anyone should worry about them.

Deuteronomy 28 outline the curses that will happen to the people of Israel if they do not adhere to the laws of The Living God. Read it; it sounds awful close to what has happened to Blacks over the past hundreds of years.
It is said that when The Living God scattered the Israelites, many of them retreated into Africa, particularly the Northern and the Western portions. The Western portion of Africa is where people were taken and brought to the Americas to become slaves. While we may be mixed with the Africans we are not 100% African. At the time of the scattering it is believed the peopel of Israel were still black.
They also believe that the current Jews (who are lighter-skinned and possibly of caucasoid descent) are descendants of the Khazars. They explain why on their site but I am not one to totally believe that the current Jews are not also descendents of the original Hebrews/Israelites; look at their curly hair (Jewfro) and their distinct noses.
I’m just trying to explain them. I love them. I am not vegan because, as it says in Romans, to eat meat or not to eat meat is left up to the believer.
Alot of my issues with them are strictly detail-oriented. That does not mean that they are not righteous; I whole-heartedly believe they are and I whole-heartedly believe they are — WE are — truly Israel.

Fristly l would like to respond to the blog left by sister Sa’rah on the issue of the name “Ben-Ammi”.
It has alwasys been a hebrew culture to give names according to a/the specific purpose of an individual’s life- in hebrew we do not give/adopt names for the sake of it but rather it suggests the persons mission or character i.e OBADYAH which means Servant of Yah,
ZechariYah – Yah Remembers
ZephaniYah – Yah Hides
Hoshea(Hosea) , Yeshia Yehu(isaiYah), Yeshua ben Nun(joshuah son of Nun) and Yahoshua ben Yosef(the messiah) all of the 4 names commonlly mean the Salvation of Yah/Yah’s Salvation.
Now back to the issue, the same can be said about the name Ben-Ammi which means ‘Son of my People’, which people? Ysrayl of course. His name has nothing to do with Ben- Ammi father of the Ammonites, His mission is to re-gather his people(brothers & sisters) of Ysrayl back onto the creator in accordance to scripture which says Yehudah(Tribe Judah) will gather his brothers(rest of the 11 tribes) again in the latter days (end times ‘our time’ ), this was obiviously why he chose/given the name, to bring back we the lost sheep of ysrayl and he is not the only one doing so, there are other hebrews doing their part as is our moral obligation.
Secondly, l would like to encourage all my people especially of African (espcially ‘black christians and moslems’) decent to strat doing research on our African history, there is a lot information about your true hebrew heritage and other great civilisations (Egypt) is only the tip of the mountain.
I can atest to this, am an ‘african’ born en bred but l was shocked at how much lies l was meant to believe about myself and my people and our culture and history-it can only be worse for my people in the western hemispheres(USA,EUROPE), You have been cut off from your land and culture forced to worship gods of wood and stone, gods neither you nor your forefathers knew.
Surely for my black christians all over the world if l may ask, how can you expect to find ‘Salvation’ in a religion that was first used as a tool to ‘oppress’ our fathers, the missionaries came to africa with a bible in one hand and a gun in the other, he then told us to close our eyes in prayer and by the time we openned our eyes, we had the bible they had the land.
The messiah taught us one important principle, Judge a tree by the fruit it bears (judge a things by their actions) because actions speak louder than words, keep in mind that the messiah was not a christian nor did he strat this religion, and his message was meant for us ISRAEL Matthew 10;5 These twelve Yahshuah sent forth, and commanded them, saying, Go NOT into the way of the Gentiles, and into any city of the Samaritans enter ye not:
6 But go rather to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.

ONLY THROUGH THE CHOSEN SEED OF YAQQB WILL THIS WORLD BE SAVED. Yah has not neglected his first born he sent the messiah teach us but we refused to listen, Yah then left us to the hands of our enemies and oppressors for atleast 2000yrs but now we must rise again and return to Yah.

People you should beware and test everything against your inner self, for delusion is so paramount today in the world, that those who once used the bible (with white faces)to capture you can also use the same bible (with black faces) to keep you captured.
The bible as far as i am concerned is a masonic book, it contains the way the masonic elite uses and abuses this world, it contains the things they do and continue doing to us.
All those prophets, kings, gods in the bible are just not what you think they are, read it more carefully, genocide of whole nations, destruction, deception in the name of a god etcetera.

Ref to the coment posted by PARAREALIST, you refer to the bible as a masonic text compiled by mason, do you have any evidence to support your claim? Your concept of SELF awareness sounds very familiar to the concept taught by the Ngostics who belived in the power of the SELF- any correlation?
Belive it or not the people who wrote the scriptures existed, they were as real as you and me. Archeologically the time of the free masons and the time the bible is belived to have been written don’t add up, The Torah, or the first five books of the Old Testament, was compiled by 300 BC, and the rest of the Old Testament had been established by the 1st century AD. The New Testament consists of 27 documents written between AD 50 and 150. The final composition of the New Testament was not decided until AD 367. The bible pre-dates the freemasons who’s origins are from around 18th century. This means that your arguement is value laden(non factual) and has nothing to do with facts or realism.
Secondly- you say that the acients used to commit genocides in the name of Yah, if you really took time to understand how the bible is written it would be self explanatory. One of the reasons why death was so prominent during then and even more today is because the sons of Adam walk contrary to the plan of the creator. Yah’s intention was not to put man on earth so that he could come, suffer, suffer even more and finally die- there was and is an eternal plan that Yah has for mankind but because we choose to be contrast it is only relative that we find ourselves in this predicament. Sodom and Gomorah were destroyed not because they were innocent lambs and Yah was just being a bully… No! They were the epic of that generation, they too believed strongly in the very SELF that you speak of but where did it get them? they where comsumed by fire and brimstone. Now though non of us witnessed those times I think it is still safe to say the Sodom and Gomorah combined have nothing on America and Europe today.
I aint preaching hate don’t get me wrong, I am merely trying to point out that during those times there was no such thing as ‘liberal democracy’ or ‘human rights.’ It was a matter of who does righteousness and who does wickedness. Away form the bible- even the other civilisations of that time were the same, egyptians, phonecians, ethiopians, hamites, assiryans etc excercised same maybe even worse punishment on other people and nations. The hebrews just kept theirs well documented.
Be careful not to confuse religion with righteousness, they are not the same thing nor do they mean the same. Religion fashions you in the image of man- righteousness fashions you in the image of the creator. To say you have a king or God ruling over you does’nt mean you will be eventualy opressed and spoiled, the authority of the rulers of today is based on wickdness that is why the human family cannot live in harmony because there is no truth among her leaders. The ideology that the SELF is your god is the very ideology which has prompted men to see others as inferior hence the expression “Two Generals can not rule in One Town.” It is why men and women are no longer their brothers’ and sisters’ keepers. It must have been such teachings and ideas which made solomon say “fools convince themselves that there is no God… and so they say let us eat and drink and be merry”
My people wisdom knows her children and she will reward them accordingly keep in mind also that the fear of YHWH(YAH) is the begining of wisdom.

No i have not got proof like that, but it is my conclusion from my life experiences and dealings with the bible. I was once religeous because
of my upbringing, but as time went on i started to realise that something is
wrong with that.
I mean, i took on the god of my parents, (who probably did the same too),
but as i grew i wanted to find this God for myself. Years of personal research has now led me to where i am now. I realise that this is my personal belief at the moment, and unless another has had the same or similiar experiences
they will not be able to percieve what i am saying.
All i want to say really, is beware of taking something on and following it
just because you were reared in that way, search out and research it.
Just because people has been worshipping a god for so long does not mean it is true, there has also been people who don’t believe for just as long.
I suggest you find as much as you can about the history of Earth and the development of humankind, but as i said it took me years of reading and searching, plus my experiences.
There are many writings out there that are just as powerful as the bible, and some of them actually belonged to the bible, and were removed sometime in the Roman era.
Apocalypse actually means to “lifting of the veil” or revelation, dont know why it is seen as catastrophe? Although i suppose it would be a catastrophe to those who try to keep knowledge secret.
To me, the main thig that will happen is the revealing of knowledge that has been kept secret, and the correcting of knowledge that was falsely presented.
One thing you should do is, ASK yourself why do YOU believe in god?
If you think carefully about this and answer truthfully, you will see what i mean.
Yes, i do believe in the power of SELF, all this means is that i refuse to let others define me, i define myself. Everyone seems to be afraid to speak out against this concept of god, i wonder why?
What i’ve found is that people who believe in God are either:
1: The ones conning and fooling
OR
2: The ones being conned and fooled.
This is as i percieve it at the moment.

masons is just a more modern name for what has its origin much earlier.
Recently, (as i was growing up) it was thought that Greece was the mother of civilisation.
Then Egypt was discovered to have been more advanced.
Now Sumer is the oldest civilisation known and existed long before Egypt.
Strange thing is, the stories from Greece, and Egypt mirror the Sumerian ones
especially the story of Jesus/Horus, the stories of the flood, virgin birth, and i once read somewhere even the robin hood story of UK has its origins in Sumer. And i have not even touched on the Indo-China and writings from that area of the world. There is too much going on to just take on someone else’s perspective (even if it was your parents) without finding out for yourself.

sorry for taking too long to get back to you brother and thanks for writing back in the first place. Your observations are quite correct and justified. Yes it would seem that a lot of history books are being re- written- this is largely due to that fact that we are now living in the AGE of information. A lot of pre- concieved ideas are now being dis credited.
