Dead Sea
The drive from Dimona to the Dead Sea offers a combination of sights and interpretations. In Dimona itself, across from the bus station, stands one of Israel’s omnipresent reminders of military victory and its ideological subtext.
A few miles eastward, it’s easy enough from the back seat of a car to snap a photo alongside Israel’s no-longer-secret nuclear reactor.

That’s about where the ugly side of the desert becomes hard to ignore, Israel’s environmental consciousness coming late and slowly.

Finally approaching the Dead Sea, the view astounds.
The Dead Sea is called, in Hebrew, Salt Sea. Here’s why.
The water reflects everything, including Jordan’s mountains a swimmable distance away.
Then, so-called civilization.
But still the clear reflection.
